Re: DNA

One of our IMFA members, Peg Redfearn, who is also a member of the Branford Mx clan, recently wrote me with some questions, which I dutifully tried to answer. One of these questions referred to the surname Embree. Since Marie Spearman likes to see this kind of thing published for all to see I'm writing it up as a Blog. Please note that my answers were extemporaneous, thus are subject to the vagaries of my aging brain rather than being the result of careful, exhaustive research. As always, we welcome rebuttal and/or comments.--wjs

Our exchange follows:
Peg's question: '...have you run into any Mulliners (spelt Melnere in Latin on the record) in Shotley Parish Ipswich dated around 1327? It came up on Ancestry with the names Ricardus, Alicia, Johannes and Willmos. There was also a "Mullener the Ducheman"mentioned on one of the tax records. I seem to get a lot of Milners as well. ol' soundex kicks in, I guess. Also do you know if the Embree family were French or English?'

Wayne's response: 'According to the tax records, there was a whole slew of Mulliners in Shotley. I've run into this Dutch thing before, but it was in the Colonies--our family's surname was sometimes spelled in a pseudo-Dutch fashion (Molinour) during the era when Westchester and the Bronx were still part of New Netherlands.

According to one of my British Mx correspondents a bunch of Netherlanders were brought over to Suffolk to drain the fens. I believe this was in the 16th Century when the Habsburgs were persecuting Dutch Protestants (I know that my Dutch ancestors fled to Schleswig-Holstein in 1525, so the timing would be good.) In Suffolk the Dutch were called ditchers or dickers (origin of several English surnames, including Deeks.) The Dutch version of the name is Molenaer/Mollenauer/Molenaar/Mulinaar, and means (no big surprise here) 'miller'.

What I can say is that Thomas Mx the Elder was born in England in the mid-16th Century and was a joiner--a trade far removed from ditching, dyking or draining. While its possible that he was of Dutch descent he's more likely to have been of either Celtic/Anglo-Saxon descent from a family of millers; or of Norman descent. (In all three cases the surname derives from the trade.) The surname Molyneux, when spoken by a Frenchman, sounds very much like Mulliner to the ear of a native English speaker.

I hadn't checked out the name Embree, but I thought it too was probably of Norman origin, perhaps a diminutive of D'embry. However, a quick check reveals (at least according to one source) that it is a Cornish name derived from a placename, as follows:
"The name Embree is a local type of surname and the Embree family lived at the town of Embrough in Devon. The name is also classified as a
baptismal name as in the son of Emory."

Since the Cornish, like the Welsh, are Celtic and thus culturally allied to the inhabitants of Normandy, its not surprising that their names/placenames would sound similar.'

Peg again: 'I saw one document that mentioned a possible Huguenot Embree, but from Normandy, it was not a record though, just a story. Ive seen nothing else to support it.'

Wayne again: 'As I said earlier, I've never checked out the Embree surname, but did find a book called The Emancipator by Elihu Embree, at Googlebooks which discusses an Embree whose family reputedly descends from Huguenots from the village of Ambres in the Languedoc region of France--unfortunately, most of that discussion is exempted from Google's on-line version, so we'll have to look elsewhere to get the full text. You'll note, that as with the Cornish-derived Embrees, the name is tied to a placename. Also note the similarity of the two placenames: Cornish Embrough and French Ambres--probably an artifact of common cultural roots.'

This is a shot in the dark because Betty Molyneux Brown worked hard on this – but one never knows if somebody has turned up something new in the meantime.

An Embarassment of Lafayettes

As some of you know, I've been working diligently on a family tree for the Branford Mx family. I don't pretend that I'll ever get each and every one of Thomas' many descendants documented therein, but I'm trying to make it as complete as I can, with the goal of publishing a sanitized version on our IMFA Webpage.

A week or so ago, while updating the tree, I ran across a record for one Lafayette Mx, born to John and Christina Spencer Mx ca 1857, most likely in Delaware Co., New York. In following his the name through on-line records, I came to the realization that I was conflating him with another Lafayette Mx of approximately the same age.

Figuring that Lafayette was a fairly unusual given name, I did what I usually do in such circumstances and proceeded to document all the Lafayette/Lafe Mx's I could find data for. Imagine my surprise when I was able to distinguish no fewer than 13 men--not including those whose middle name was Lafayette--by that name.

From my family tree perspective, this exercise wasn't particularly productive as our Branford Mx Lafayette apparently died in childhood--he was not listed in the 1870 Census or any time thereafter. But, rather than waste all that research, I've decided to share it with you. May you use it in good health.

Of the 13 Lafayette's:
#1 is the one from the Branford Mx family (out of Connecticut and New York);
#2 was born 1830 in Georgia, and was probably from the South Carolina Mx family;
#3 was born in South Carolina ca 1837;
#4 has been thoroughly conflated with the one from Georgia, he was born ca 1839-1844 in Tennessee;
#5 was born 1843 in Illinois, and is probably a descendant of the Delaware Mx family;
#6 was born 1856 in Ohio--this is the one with whom I had conflated the Branford Mx Lafayette;
#7 was a junior, born to Lafayette #6, in 1904 Illinoiis;
#8 was born 1880 in Georgia, and is also probably from the South Carolina Mx family;
#9 was born 1882 in Missouri and is likely a descendant of the Maryland Mx family;
#10 was born ca 1890 in Colorado;
#11 was born 1894 in Utah to an Mx family that emigrated in the 19th Century;
#12 was born 1896 in Kentucky, and is probably a descendant of either the Maryland or the Delaware Mx families;
#13 was born 1897 in Iowa.

The following is a transcript of the records I found on these men,. in the order described above.

LAFAYETTE MULNIX ref: Juanita Mulnix I have been unable to trace any of the children of Lafayette, but my husband, Lester Mulnix can remember him as Uncle Lafe. He was a small man 5'3" tall and he had grey eyes and brown hair. Layfayette enrolled in Spring Hill, KS on the first day of Nov 1861 as a Private in Company I, Eighth Regiment of the KS Volunteers, in the service of the United States in the Civil War and was honorably discharged at Strawberry Plains, East TN on the first day of Jan 1864 and re-enlisted in the above Company and was discharged Nov 28, 1865. ------------------------------------------------------------- ref: Rebecca Watson Walker 4/98 Hi Jerry: Wanted to pass this on to you. It's not the actual clipping, but a photocopy of the article. "Couple Wed 60 Years Wait for Last Great Adventure" "Mr. and Mrs. Lafayette Mulnix celebrate three-score years of life together; woman waited for lover thru Civil War; now prepared to die together" "Thru nerve wracking war years,, when the Blue and the Grey fought in the '60s, thru stirring homesteader days in the west, thru years that saw inventions sweep the world into a high speed mechanical age, and thru their full share of woe and tribulations--thru all that and more went Mr., and Mrs. Lafayette Mulnix. Last night they paused, in a quiet way, to look back on 60 years of happily married life. At their little home at 2322 West Kiowa Street they received their few remaining relatives and some close friends, who congratulated them on the occasion. They told of a full life, and a rich one, and they told of how, now that sunset's glowing red is beginning to fade, they look forward complacently to the tomb. No regrets cloud their minds, and no ill deeds live to haunt them, they said. They have no formulas for happiness of any rigid sort, other than unselfishness and an understanding of each other. 'I am 86 years old', he said. 'She is 80. We've gotten along this far.' And he paused a moment when asked if he had any formula for a happy married life. "Oh no", he answered; "we've just jogged along." "Well," explained Mrs. Mulnix, "our only rule has been to take it one day at a time." Then they revealed that not only have they never had any difficulties, but have never fought with each other. "Never any hair pullings," facetiously explained Mr. Mulnix. They were married May 23, 1869 at Sharon, Henry county, IL just after Mr. Mulnix , unscarred and bearing only painful wounds in his memory, left the Union ranks after fighting thru the full duration of the Civil War. Settling down on a homestead in KS, they sought peace and contentment after the four war years, and successfully tilled the soil. Year followed year, bringing in rapidly moving sequences pleasure and enjoyment. They enjoyed good health and a fair degree of prosperity. Trouble beset them when the great grasshopper plague swept the middle west, some 30 odd years ago. The plague ruined crops, precipitated a small panic in the great plains region, and they were reduced to virtual poverty. Mrs. Mulnix then took up teaching in a rural school, working shoulder to shoulder with her life partner to assist the two of them to get back on their feet. In 1905 they came to CO Springs, secured their present home and decided to spend the rest of their days here. Until very recently they remained here, then going back to Fort Dodge, Kan., where he soon became sick, and was at the point of death, when it was decided his only chance, at that advanced age, was to come to CO Springs again. This was only three months ago. Change of climate, from the hot plains to cool CO, together with new environment and better doctors, worked wonders for Mr. Mulnix, even in his declining years. Last night he said he felt 'better than in ages'. They have run life's course. They're waiting 'for the closed curtain and the dropt gate' now. Here because two sisters of his, Mrs. Mary Hickox and Mrs. M. Skinner, and a brother, Julius Mulnix, live in CO Springs and the vicinity, they feel that with their only surviving kin about them, they are "ready to go". "We have picked out of plots in Evergreen", said Mr. Mulnix, his eyes looking off with a look that was neither sad nor disturbed. "Even our tombstones are chosen. And we're not afraid. We know it may come any time." They still sit and ponder over the miraculous changes science has wrought during their lives. "I would never have dreamed," said Mr. Mulnix, "That some day we would see horseless carriages, or telephones, electric lights, radios, airplanes and what not. It seems like almost too much." Mr. Mulnix spoke with pride of his war days - days when he dreamed of the end of it all, when peace would come "in another month", and the boys would go back to their homes and families. Then it was his future bride, in her home in Moline, Ill., waited and prayed that her lover would come thru safely. Patriotism burned bright in his breast. He was one of the first volunteers in an IL ompany. He went with the colors, to right a great wrong. When his normal enlistment was up, after two years of service, he promptly enlisted again, fighting thru the full duration of the war. Thru many battles, with General Sherman, at Chickamauga, at Mission Ridge, Kenesaw mountain, Peachtree Creek, Lovejoy station, Franklin and Nashville - thru "to the sea" - he went behind the famous general. He saw the burning of Atlanta, GA, and he experienced the great thrill of the end of the conflict when he could return to marry his love. As in war he felt not fear of death, now they both have no terror of the grim reaper in peace time.

A recollection by Donald Mulnix
Lafe-Benjamin & family Mulnix ref: Rebecca Watson Walker - this information came to her from Donald B Mulnix. He also enclosed a photocopy ofanother letter which states: "Your great great grandfather's last name was Mulleneaux. His first name and the name of his wife have been forgotten. They were emigrant farmers who came to the United States sometime between 1830 and 1840. They settled on a homestead which was located in what would now be near the center of the city of Chicago IL. This area was apparently inhabited by a large number of French emigrents many of which had the same last name of Mulleneaux, a very common last name and the French equivalent to Smith. He therefore changed the spelling of the name to Mulnix but continued to pronounce it the same. (Mul-in-o) No one seems to know why we eventually started to pronounce the x as an x. This was probably started by American neighbors who pronounced letters as they saw them. The Mulleneaux had twelve children one of which was your great grandfather Lafayette Mulnix. During this period of time they moved from IL to KS where they again took up homesteading. No November 1, 1861 at aaage 16 Lafayette "Lafe" Mulnix ran away and joined the union army and fought with the th KS Volunteers. He was discharged on December 31, 1863 ( "I have attached a copy of his discharge"). Lafe returned to KS and married a school teacher named Florence Adoline Woodward. They lived a very long life and spent their 69th wedding anniversary together living in an old soldiers home in Ft Dodge KS. Lafe was always a farmer and apparently was very proud of his service in the Civil War. To back up a little now, the father of Lafe's wife ( "your great great grandfather") was Doctor Benjamin Richmond Woodward, who was born at Park House,Devonshire, England on February 11, 1811. He was apparently from a reasonably well to do family, an English gentleman, who came to America as a young man. The doctor married Amanda Hargin who was born in Ithica, NY in 1813. We don't know much of her background but she was apparently well educated and a nurse. Doctor Woodward spent four years in the Civil War as a surgeon. He volunteered on the 6th of October, 1862 at the age of 51 and served until the seventh of July 1865. During this time Amanda spent much of her time on the battle fields with her husband. I have attached the Civil War discharge of Dr Woodward and I have also attached a reprint of a letter he wrote in which he described to her the Battle of Belwood which took place near Columbus OH on October 9th, 1861. ("This was prior to his actual enlistment and during a time that he was serving without pay or rank") The original of this letter is written in beautiful script in brown ink., The typed copy was made by Aunt Chuck and although difficult to read is well worth the time if you want to know how he felt about the war, slavery, and pride of service. Doctor Woodward and Amanda Hargin had two sons and four daughters. The sons, Henry and Howard both went into the Civil Warl Henry was killed in the first battle which was with General Sherman at Franklyn, Tenn. Dr Woodward died in Olathe, KS on June 29, 1887 and his wife died on May 27, 1892 also in Olathe. Your grandfather, my dad, was Benjamin Richmond Mulnix who was born in White City KS on September 21, 1887. He was one of eleven children born to Lafe and Florence, six boys and five girls. Three of the children died as infants and one as a teen aged girl There were no hospitals in that part of KS during those years and many children died during birth or shortly there-after. My dad's eldest brother was a premature baby which was so small at birth that they kept him wrapped in cotton inside a shoebox which they made into an incubator by packing hot water bottles around it. Florence was said to be able to slip her wedding ring on the baby's arm all the way to the elbow. Benjamin R Mulnix left the farm as a young man and worked at various jobs in the manhatten KS area. In one of these jobs he fell into a pit of hot water and was badly burned from the waist down. When the first world war came, Ben enlisted in April of 1917 and served with the 137th Infantry 35th Division. He saw action in France and Germany and spent many months fighting the trench warfare on the western front. This was a barren no mans land in which the German and allied armies faced each other in miles of trenches. This hopeleses deadlock lasted over a year, a period during which there was so much shelling that not even a blade of grass survived. The hell of this type war is told in the book, "All Quiet on the Western Front" something you might like to read if you ever get the time. Ben was eventually wounded by a shell burst during one of the many back and forth charges of trench fighting. He lay in a shell hole for over a day, with wounds to his right leg, before he was moved back to a field hospital. Surgery had advanced beyond amputation techniques of Dr Woodward's Civil War days and Ben's leg was saved and he was eventually moved back to the army hospital at Fort Dodge KS to recover. During this recuperation period Ben renewed his courtship with your grandmother, Ellen Christine Lindstrom. Although they had known each other for some time prior to the war Ben had decided to wait till the war was over to marry. They were married on April 21, 1919 in Junction City KS. Ben was 31 years old and Ellen was 23." ======================== ref: Rebecca Watson Walker- written by Donald Mulnix -"I was born when my mother was 40 years old and my dad died when I was nine in the winter during November of 1944 (or 45* ) All of my brothers and sister were older than I and all were serving in the armed forces during WW2 Charles was a fighter pilot who was shot down and served 18 months in a German prison camp. Harold was in the Navy and served aboard a submarine in the Pacific. Sylvia was an Army nurse who served in hospitals in the US. Following my dad's death my mom worked very hard to get me raised. She did baby sitting, took in washing, and rented the back bedroom of the house. She finally got a job as a nurse's aide at Fitzsimons Hospital where she worked until she retired at age 69. Her strength during those years is an inspiration to me still. She had to be a father and do things like fix a bike, make wooden guns, and build kites. She worked in the yard, painted the house, and fixed flats on the car. Yet with all of this she remained a beautiful and tender woman who gave me a strong religious upbringing and a pleasant sense of happy security in my home. She has the ability to see beauty in everything and never seems to dwell on the unhappy aspects of life. Some day I am going to spend a great deal of time writing my memories of this unusual woman."

Lafayette J. Mullenix -- Obituary -- July 4, 1917
July 4, 1917, Pike Co., IL
Pike Co. Republican -- July 4, 1917
"Mr. Lafe Mullenix passed away at his home in this city Tuesday Evening, June 26, at 5.30 after an extended illness.

He was born in Hillsboro, OH October 31, 1856 and grew to manhood in that place. He came with his parents to Pike Co., IL where he lived until his marriage to Miss Fannie Williams of Milton on December 9, 1892. To this union were born five children: Harvey, Lafe Jr., Arthur, and David at home, and Mrs. Charles James [Hattie] of Pittsfield. There is also a grandson, Lyndell R. James.

Besides his wife and children, he leaves a sister, Lida Manker of this City, and two brothers, Turner of Milton and Bud of Griggsville. Last October Mr. Mullenix and his family moved to Cincinnati, OH. His health failed very fast there. He was for a time in the Christian Hospital, but there being no hope for his recovery, the family returned to Pittsfield. He had been sick for eight months and was confined to his bed for five weeks and two days, during which time his loved ones did all that was in their power to help him."

Supplied by Betty Mullenix's pamphlett, supplied to her by "Bernie and Hugh Murphy, Scottsdale, AZ 1991."

Betty indicates that her father, Lafe Jr., told her the family had gone to Cincinnati to seek better medical care. They stayed with or near Lafe Sr.'s sisters, Catherine and Margaret.

Lafe Sr. was 62 years old. He spent his life as a farm laborer and "walked behind a plow all day for a dollar." He died of stomach cancer. He was buried at the Pittsfield West Cemetery, Lot 383, in the old section.

Local Workers Killed in Double Mishap; A tragedy involving a man and wife who had spent the Summer in this area picking fruit, leaving here Saturday, occurred at Jacksonville Saturday night when Lafayette Molyneaux, 46, and his wife, Vera, 32, were killed by one shot from the accidental discharge of a rifle. According to the story of the dead man's brother, Rodney, Lafayette had been drinking and Rodney started to remove a rifle from the room to avoid trouble, but Lafayette seized the barrel, and in the scuffle that followed, the one shot killed both Lafayette and his wife. The dead woman had been divorced from Rodney, and of six children, three were born to the first marriage.

Good News on the MX-DNA Front

Hi All;

As at least some of you know, IMFA member, George Mollineaux (US294), has been trying to prove or disprove his descent from the Branford, CT, Mx's (my Mx line as illustrated in our Wiki of the same name--http://imfa.pbworks.com/I-Branford-MX%27s%3A-Intro). To further this goal he has taken a Y-DNA test and is awaiting the results.

In preparation for that I've been trying to identify living males with the Branford Mx Y-DNA to serve as proofs with which to compare George's DNA. It just occurred to me today (somewhat belatedly, I admit), that some of the pedigrees/DNA results already listed in our DNA page (http://www.imfa-dna.com/) might provide just such a comparison. As it turns out, I did find a pedigree, that of Dallas Mullinnex (Kit: 80097), which belongs to the Branford Mx's. (Dallas' haplogroup is Type R1B-not yet assigned a type.)

The pedigree for John Mullinex as featured on the DNA page is as follows:
1 John Mullinex, b Jun 1830, NY; d c 1900, Delaware Co., NY
m Christina C. LNU, date, place unknown

2 James Ira (also known as Ira James) Mullinex, b May 1864, NY; d c 1941, Delaware Co., NY
m Anna Cummings, date, place unknown

3 Raphael J. Mullinex, b c 1918, NY; d date, place unknown

4 Dallas Mullinnex

This same pedigree as reflected in my Branford Mx tree is as follows:
John Mullinex/Mulnix/Mulanix, b. Jun 1828-1830, in Andes Twp., Delaware Co., NY , d. 1900, Tompkins Twp., Delaware Co., NY, bur. Dryden Brook Cemetery, Dryden Brook Rd., Delaware Co., NY, USA. He m1. Christina C. Spencer ca 1851-1854, in Andes Twp. They had the following children: Elizabeth, LaFayette, Hiram, Mary J., Sarah C., James Ira, Uriah, Sophia, Louisa, and Abijah.

John's parents were Charles Mx Sr. (1792-1859) & Abigail Gregory (1794-1876). His siblings were Jarvis (1815-1889), Samuel (1817-1897), & Richard (1825-??)

If, as we suspect, George is indeed one of the Branford Mx's, then John would be his 3rd cousin, 4 times removed, and John's descendant, Dallas, would be George's 5th cousin, once removed. (Dallas and I are also fifth cousins, once removed.)

It appears that this comparison will result in at least two, and possibly three, happy results: 1) Dallas will benefit from the documentation in my Branford Mx family tree; 2) I will have some more names to add to my Branford Mx tree; and 3) George may finally have proof of his relationship to the Branford Mx's.

Unfortunately, the John-Dallas pedigree was the only one listed to date for the Branford Mx's, so if you are an male descendant, surname Mx, seriously consider getting the Y-DNA test. And even if you don't , you should be able to use Dallas' DNA results to type yourself. Cheers, Wayne

SC-VA/WV-DE Mx Connection?

Whether you're new at "blogging" or it is common place, welcome! I'm new at it so please bear with me as I learn. I've embarked on this new venture in an attempt to both share --- as well as obtain --- information about my pre-Revolutionary War Mx ancestors. ("Mx" represents the more than 200 ways of spelling Mullinax, Mulenix, etc.)

I have conclusive documentation that takes me back to my GGGG grandfather, John Mx, who was born between 1765 & 1774, died in SC in 1819 or 1820, & had a wife named Alsey (a nickname for Alice). Whether or not Alsey was the only wife John ever had is not yet known. The theory has been that this John's parents were John & Sarah who were of what eventually became Cherokee County, SC, but I am open to following the clues wherever they may lead. The strongest clues seem to point to Virginia as the pre-SC location, & recently, clues have emerged that point to possible Delaware & West Virginia connections as well.

Did you have Mx ancestors in any of these areas during the 1700s? If so, I invite you to share your thoughts & ideas related to things shared in this blog &/or related to my two reports at the link mentioned here. Several of us have already been exchanging ideas & information, and as we do, theories continue to develop, & we'd love for you to hop on board & enjoy the ride!

More Changes to the Wiki

In the spirit of increasing connectivity among Mx sites, we've changed the name of the "Share page" on our Wiki to "Sharing & Links"; put it into a folder called "Sharing" to make it more accessible from the Front Page; and expanded its function to include an extensive (but not exhaustive) list of links to genealogical/history-oriented Web sites about Mx's.

If you don't see your site here and would like to, send me the url. If I think its appropriate, I'll include it in the list. However, though I try to keep abreast of changes in the link addresses and of dead links, I'm not responsible for the linked sites' health and well being. If you find a dead or misdirected link in our pages, let me know that as well.--WJS (woichi01@comcast.net)

IMFA's Web Presence Evolving

Note from Wayne:

As our on-line functionality continues to expand, the IMFA finds itself in need of new ways of doing business. One thing that has become abundantly clear is that we need to have obvious and easy connectivity among our various on-line presences--our homepage, our DNA page, our Wiki and our Blog--as well as to other Mx-oriented sites such as those posted on the front page of our Wiki (The newest of these is Mx An American Story (http://www.mxroots.us/), a site dedicated primarily to the South Carolina Mullinax's, et al. Our thanks to Wendy Arnim (US339) for this link.)

Our most recent change involves connectivity between our Wiki and our Blog. Although, our Wiki has a built-in comments function, the ability for you to comment is constrained by your access privileges. Everyone in the world has "Read" access to our Wiki but only IMFA members or those non-members with an Mx-based story to tell, can have "Write" access*, and unfortunately you can't comment within the Wiki without "Write" access.

To get around this problem we've inserted a hot-link on each and every page of the Wiki (excepting appendices) which looks like this:
RESPOND

Clicking on this hot-link within the Wiki will automatically redirect you to our Blog page. Once there, you simply go to the upper right hand corner of the Blog window and sign in. Once signed in, you can click on "New Post" and make your comments in re any aspect of our Wiki. Once your Blog has been posted, one of our administrators will copy and paste it into the appropriate comments window on the Wiki.

Future changes may involve Web Hooks or some other Web technology to ensure seamless connectivity among the IMFA's many parts. Keep tuned in to learn of new changes as they develop.

*This is due to a combination of constraints within PBWiki and the IMFA's need to ensure a modicum of control over content within the Wiki. Our policy in this regard is still a matter of discussion and may change in future.
